Where a 1:1 and a 20:1 Seed Part Ways

Put two packs of CBD seeds beside each other, one labelled 1:1 and the other 20:1, and the two look identical: the same breeder's foil, same seed count, contents that nobody's eye can tell apart. Grow them in the same tent and they part ways at the very first stage and do not meet again. The reason is one single gene, and the clearest way to understand what it does is to follow the two packs along every stage both go through: the breeding that made them, the seed, the seedling, the flowering room, the harvest, the jar, the lab report and the law. The lines quoted as examples below are drawn from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, and that range runs 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 with a highest line at about 30 to one; the biology is the same regardless of which shop the seeds came from.

How Each Pack Was Made

Cannabis settles if it is going to produce THC or CBD at one position on the genome. The gene there exists in two forms: one codes the enzyme that converts the common precursor into THCA, the other the enzyme that turns it into CBDA. Each plant holds two copies, one received from either parent, and the combination fixes the chemotype. Two THC copies make a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies give a CBD-dominant one. One of each makes a balanced plant, because the two versions are codominant and neither silences the other.

The balanced pack was made by pairing two balanced plants, each holding one copy of each form. The 20:1 pack was bred by crossing two plants which both carry two CBD copies and no THC copy in either of them. This one difference at the cross decides everything downstream, and it is fully in the seed long before it is packed.

What the Pack Actually Holds

Cross two balanced plants and the seeds fall out by the simplest arithmetic in genetics: a quarter inherit two THC copies, a quarter inherit two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that works out to, on average, two or three THC-dominant seeds, around two CBD-dominant ones, and five genuine balanced ones. The pack is labelled by its parents, and in the case of half its seeds the label fits; in the case of the other half it does not. Calm CBD Seeds prints the expected split on each balanced line, which means the buyer sees ahead of planting that a portion of the plants will depart from the stated ratio.

The 20:1 pack has no such spread. Every seed received a CBD copy from both parent, every plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil holds to every one of them, within the ordinary differences in the amount of total cannabinoid any individual plant produces. The trade say these lines "breed true" for chemotype; the term means exactly this lack of surprise.

Where Nothing Shows

At this stage the two packs appear alike again, and the likeness lasts longer than most growers assume. Chemotype leaves no mark on a seedling. Leaf, vigour, stem length and the speed of growth rate are governed by different genes altogether, and the different kinds of plant in the balanced pack grow indistinguishably beside one another and from each plant in the 20:1 pack.

The one practical difference during this stage comes from ancestry rather than chemotype. Strains with strong hemp genetics, which includes a number of less developed CBD-dominant lines, tend to stretch rangier and branch more sparsely. A heavily selected 20:1 line grows like any indoor hybrid; a early-generation one may still carry the field in its shape. Neither habit says anything about the ratio to come.

Stage Four: The Flowering Room

In flower the two packs start to offer clues, and the majority of the clues mislead. Trichome coverage is the first thing a grower judges, and it was a fair guide: early CBD-dominant strains carried markedly less resin than their THC counterparts, an unwanted inheritance from hemp. Current selections have largely erased that gap, and a less frosted plant from the 20:1 pack may perfectly well test precisely where the foil said. Trichome density and chemotype are inherited separately.

Smell is worse. The terpene profile sits on still different genes, so the THC-dominant plant sitting in the balanced pack can be indistinguishable to the balanced one next to it, and both can be indistinguishable to a plant from the 20:1 pack. People who try to sort a balanced pack by nose at week eight are right about half the time, and that is not better than not unsorted at all.

Stage Five: The Harvest Window

Here the two packs diverge in a manner that favours the grower of the 20:1 pack and the CBD-dominant plants hidden in the balanced pack. CBDA breaks down more slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant allowed a week beyond its ideal point keeps the bulk of its cannabinoid load, where a THC-dominant one in the same neglect has already started converting THC to CBN. The cloudy guidance nonetheless applies; it holds on account of the terpenes, which fade on every plant whatever the chemotype, and a late, over-dried CBD flower smells of very little however good the lab result is.

What Mixing Does

The 20:1 pack can go into one jar. Every plant from it carries about the same ratio, and blending them alters nothing anyone would measuring. The balanced pack should never be treated the same way. Blend its 10 plants into a single jar and the result is a ratio that no foil ever promised, weighted by whichever plants grew biggest, and nothing on a subsequent test can untangle the plants that went in.

The habit that prevents the trouble is almost tedious: harvest the balanced pack plant by plant, cure every one separately, number each, and test them one at a time before anything is mixed. This is the only stage in the whole process where the three kinds of plant in the balanced pack can still be told apart short of a laboratory, and only for the reason that each is at that moment in its own bag.

Stage Seven: The Lab Report

Send a few grams from each jar to a laboratory and the two packs finally are legible. For the 20:1 pack the reports arrive back clustered tightly around the stated ratio, differing mainly in total cannabinoid content rather than in proportion. For the balanced pack they come back in three clusters: a few plants with nearly all THC, a few with almost all CBD, and the rest sitting around one to one. Nothing of that pattern is a failure; it is the breeder's cross written out as numbers.

Home test kits are sold for growers who cannot reach a laboratory, and most detect whether THC is there but not how much. That is sufficient to pull the THC-dominant plants away of a balanced pack and not enough to put a ratio to the rest, which matches the commonest use: knowing which of the 10 jars is going to surprise someone.

Stage Eight: The Border

The last stage at which the two packs diverge is in law, and it catches growers who thought "CBD" was shorthand for "hemp". The majority of countries define hemp by a THC ceiling, a fraction of a percent of dry weight, and the exact figure varying by country and sometimes year to year. A plant from the 20:1 pack making twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time makes about one percent THC, which is many times over most limits. Certified hemp lines are bred to keep total cannabinoid output down so the THC share stays under the line right up to harvest; CBD flower lines are selected for rich content and let the THC rise with it. A seller that offers only a ratio is describing a flower line; a grower who requires a legal hemp crop needs to look for a tested THC percentage at harvest and buy nothing that does not provide one.

Past the threshold question, the word on the foil alters very little in the law on the seed itself. Where holding cannabis seeds is permitted and germinating them is not, the balanced pack and the 20:1 pack sit under the same position as any other pack. Where the plant is permitted without restriction, the choice between them is a matter of preference and nobody else's. None of this page is legal advice, and the rule which applies is the one in the place the seed is going to be sown, not the one in the place it was bought.
